It looks like Ishikawa is headed to the DL to start the season, which apparently opens a spot for Duffy.

I love this kid. He is simply nit allowing the org to send him down. McGehee better get off to a hot start and not let Duffy play any 3B. If he gets in, we may never see McGehee again.

I noticed that some of the 'remaining option years' in the first post are now incorrect. Unless something changed recently that I am unaware of, a player gets 3 option years, not 4. There *is* an exception to get a 4th option year, but it isn't that common. Carbonell *will* get a 4th option year if he plays in the minors for a couple more seasons. Oh, and BTW : if any player optioned to the minors spends less than 20 days in the minors during the entire season, then the option doesn't count.

Here are the correct numbers, with details of why :

Hunter Strickland was optioned to the minors 3 times by the Giants : 2013, 2014, and 2015. (The Pirates also optioned Strickland to the minors in 2013, but 2013 is only one year so only uses one option.) He appears to already have (at least) 5 pro seasons under his belt, so 2015 is his last option year.

Chris Heston was optioned for the first time in Mar 2015, but 2015 is his 6th 'qualifying' pro season (on pro roster 90 days) so he won't get a 4th option. He has 3 options left (meaning 2015 and two other years).

Cody Hall was optioned for the first time in Mar 2015, but 2015 is his 4th 'qualifying' pro season so he probably won't get a 4th option. He has 3 options left (meaning 2015 and two other years).

Raymond Black was optioned for the first time in Mar 2015, but I'm not 100% sure of his roster status from 2011->2013. It appears that he wasn't on a minor league active roster in 2011, 2012, or 2013 - but on the DL. If that is true, then he will get a 4th option year, so he probably has 4 options left.

Derek Law was optioned for the first time in Mar 2015, but 2015 is his 4th 'qualifying' pro season so he probably won't get a 4th option unless he gets a major injury. He has 3 options left.

Joan Gregorio was optioned for the first time in Mar 2015, but 2015 is his 3rd 'qualifying' pro season so he probably won't get a 4th option unless he gets a major injury. He has 3 options left.

Susac was optioned to Fresno only in 2015, so he has 3 options years left (counting all of 2015). (This is Susac's 4th pro season, so he shouldn't get a 4th option year.)

Duvall was optioned to Fresno in 2015 and in 2014, so he has 2 option years left (including 2015). (This is Duvall's 5th pro season, so he will NOT get a 4th option year.)

Juan Perez was optioned to the minors 3 times by the Giants : 2013, 2014, and 2015. This is his 7th season - 2015 is his last option year.

Jarrett Parker was optioned to Fresno on Mar 20th, and on 08/02/14 so he only has 2 option years left, not 3. (This is Parker's 5th pro season, so he will NOT get a 4th option year.)

Carbonell was optioned in 2014 and now 2015, but since he will almost certainly be eligible for a 4th option year, 3 opts is probably correct.

I always knew my option notes were VERY inaccurate. I also began to lose track of when I updated them. I think I will change the note to the year in which they will be out of options, instead. Still a high chance of inaccuracy, but MUCH less-so than listing the number of options...

If Cal wouldn't mind updating the first post on the thread with the correct numbers when time permits? And maybe add a note that 'option years' includes the current season, so '1 option year' means 'just 2015'.

And maybe add 'option years last updated Apr 2015' - to make it easier in the future ?

Dueling posts ;)

I think 'option years remaining' is the way to go - just indicate that the 'option years remaining' *include* the current season (the option year isn't 'expired' or 'used up' until after the minor league season ends).

I disagree. If you had listed years, then you would have been completely wrong about Panik, Crawford, Sandoval, Posey, Lincecum, Cain, ... (etc.) It's best to remember the # of years remaining (which includes this season) and update it every April and Sep.

What is the deal with Cordier? I believe he is out of options, thus why he was placed on the DL...

Yea...

If a guy cements himself on the roster, he is not burning an option each year. When do the options "expire"? Once they are done with arb years?

As an example, Timmy never used a single option, but I don't think he has any remaining because he has 5+ years of service time.

I think I found a good system...

If an option has been used this year, I will place a "+" next to them.

He was optioned in '11 and '12 by the braves. The Pirates signed him to a minor league contract in '13, so no option used. The Giants signed him before 2014 and put him on the 40-man - then optioned him to Fresno, so no options remain. So the Giants look to be playing the DL game. Sure it's SSS, but you can't argue with a 13.5 K/9, a WHIP of 1.167 an ERA+ of 249, and a fastball of 100+ MPH. Bullpen coaches drool over the possibilities.

The Giants are the only team that have given him MLB time, so he would be 'captive' for 6 more seasons. If he has finally 'gotten it', he'd be great in the 'pen. Are the Gs just waiting to see who shats the 'pen first, and have Cordier replace him? At the least, if he starts out 2015 well, he could be a great trade piece.
