Frim Jeff Wilson:

Gray was expected to start this week, and maybe he still does. He rates as one of the Rangers’ best five starters, but Bradford would give them six when he returns.

Gray struck out four of the five batters he faced Saturday and hit 97 mph with his fastball after sitting 93-34 mph in his starts as he battles some arm fatigue. He also pitched well as a reliever in the World Series.

He would be an upgrade over Austin Pruitt, who allowed another home run Saturday. Gray would be an upgrade over Owen White, who was recalled Saturday to be a body in the bullpen. If the Rangers liked the way he was throwing, Gray wouldn’t have been used.

Gray would be a better bullpen option than Cole Winn, Jacob Latz and maybe Jose Leclerc. Gray and Jose Ureña, who has been very good, would give the Rangers reliable length. Gray could blossom into a one-inning high-leverage option.

Jonathan Hernandez remains on a rehab assignment, so he would be an easy swap for Pruitt. Hernandez is also approaching the end of his 30 days on assignment. The Rangers, for whatever reason, don’t seem to be motivated to bring him back.

Gray is better than Hernandez or anyone else at Triple A Round Rock. He would be a reliever than Bradford, Andrew Heaney, Dane Dunning or Michael Lorenzen.

The Rangers might want to chew on that one.

Gray threw his final inning to Sam Huff, who was recalled before the game as Jonah Heim went on the bereavement list. Huff will likely be gone by Tuesday, when the Rangers open a six-game homestand against the Mariners.

Maybe he should stick around.

No one in the organization hits the ball farther than Huff, who in November was granted an extra option year. That gave the Rangers the wiggle room to add a more experienced option, so they signed Andrew Knizner to a one-year deal.

Though he’s been used sparingly, Knizner hasn’t shown much. His lack of playing time behind Heim is one reason for his woes. Because the Rangers are riding Heim, they wouldn’t have enough time to give a younger player like Huff.

He might be an upgrade, though

Just about anyone would be an improvement over Pruitt.

I've already chewed on that one enough. Of all our starters Gray would be the best out of the pen. I would want him as our closer except Yates has done so well then Gray would be the set up man.

Derek Hill, who had a great ST, is hitting .345 for Round Rock.

Newly resigned, Shaun Anderson, had a really good outing for Round Rock today.

So Kninzer starting again. I guess Huff is going to sit until Heim gets back. I beginning to think the Rangers won the World Series in spite of the many bad decisions the manager made last year.

Bochy obviously has some kind of a personal problem with Huff.
