here you go @Coily1

Are you kidding? “Existing plants”, “small modular design”. Tell me about the MWs, and what will be built in the next ~5 years.

NIMBY and environmentalists have all but killed nuclear power in the U.S. Yes, there is existing capacity, but more is being shut down than built anew. Renewables are still too far off to meet the demand, which means more carbon-spewing natural gas-fired plants will make up the shortfall.

this is a new plant starting up

the next step is the SMRs

sorry if this just isn't enough for you.

As with anything it's about money. There's less profit in nuclear power.
for sure

and this project went way above budget and was very late on schedule.

private companies don't want to build new plants of this size anymore for that reason...and because we lost any skills needed when Reagan killed the nuclear movement.

so the next step is getting the SMRs approved and built.

How many years until it is online?
and environmentalists support nuclear.
Bullshit. Environmentalists have had an irrational dislike of nuclear power for 30+ years. It was conspicuously absent in the Green New Deal, until the stupid thing was ridiculed out of conversation.

Nuclear power would be a great interim solution, if the United States were smart enough to recognize it. It’s relatively cheap, it’s clean and it can be built almost anywhere. But it’s not new or flashy enough for state and federal officials to approve, and the time from approval to fully operational is extremely long. Leftists will be charging their cars on fossil fuel-powered electricity for years to come.

it is going online this year

and you need to update your research. There was certainly a time when they were against it but that has all changed. If you are stuck in the Jane Fonda years of nuclear, it might be time to see where everyone stands on it now.

Good. But against how many plants that have closed recently?

I just referenced the GND. It’s current thinking of the Left. There’s no massive push to build nuclear, though there probably should be.

how recent? Last one to close was Palisades and I think that was earlier this year.

and there is a very massive push from the nuclear industry and subsidies being pushed from Biden and his crew.

There will be a second reactor going online in GA early 2023 too

so selling more electricity isn't profitable?
depends

building a nuclear plant is expensive and it will take a while before you get that investment back

and maintaining and operating coal, etc plants isn't? even wind-driven systems are expensive to build and maintain

the maintenance and operating cost of coal plants is much less than a nuclear plant...far fewer regulations to keep up on.

Nuclear has so much redundency and requirements that keep the plants from having a TMI or Chernobyl incident...it costs a lot to keep up.

epa standards limit the types of coal which means coal power plants have to buy the more expensive varieties and they have to constantly upgrade and maintain them to meet standards

cool

how does that compare to nuclear power?

I have friends who have gone from nuclear to coal plants and they say it is night and day.

nuclear will have multiple groups for engineering while a coal plant will have maybe a total of 5 onsite.

the restrictions are 1000X that of coal just because of the source of power which why they are harder to get the clearances needed to even start building one but once built and during the 20 years they are operated those restrictions and guidelines make them far safer and with less impact on the environment than the comparative coal or other type of plant plus it would take 3-to 6 coal or other type of plant to produce the amount of electric power that one nuclear facility can.

TMI Unit 1 closed in 2019 because the PA legislature wouldn't pass a rescue package to keep it running. It was unprofitable with how cheap natural gas was at the time.

And Natural Gas interests lobbied hard to make sure the legislature wouldn't pass the rescue package.

So, it was fossil fuel interests that made sure at least that one nuclear plant was closed.

I am aware, thank you.

but meeting and maintaining those regulations costs money and if it takes 20 yrs for a plant to make money, what company would ever make that investment?

I agree.

My company owned TMI at the time. I had friends lose jobs over that.

There was also legistation in Illinois to keep Quad Cities and LaSalle (might have been Dresden, can't remember) open when they were no longer profitable. That legislation was passed.

TMI being a single unit plant didn't help though...keeping the single unit plants operating has been a challenge as of late.

we have fought to keep our plants in NY open as well
