January here and hopefully 2015 ends up with forward momentum for the Dawgs, rather than backwards.

The news everyone knew was coming dropped today. Shaq is going to the NFL.

One enters, one leaves. This was not shocking news either. Williams wasn't going to be a good fit for what the new coaching staff wanted from it's QBs.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Troy Williams, a former four-star recruit from Carson, Calif., has transferred out of the program, UW announced Monday.

Jake Browning, a four-star quarterback recruit from Folsom, Calif., began his first classes at UW for the start of winter term Monday. Browning set the national prep record last month by finishing his high-school career with 229 touchdown passes.

Williams’ departure leaves the Huskies with four quarterbacks on the roster: incumbent starter Cyler Miles, entering his junior season, plus junior Jeff Lindquist, redshirt freshman K.J. Carta-Samuels and Jake Browning.

So if Browning comes in and shows just as much as Miles do you use him his freshman year????

Baring a total collapse by Samuels in spring/fall, or a injury that sidelined him for the year, Browning will be red shirting 2015. He needs to hit the weight room and add some girth to his frame before playing for a P5 program.

The 2015 starting QB will be Miles or Samuels.

Yes I know, but,

if he comes out spring and fall ball throwing the ball like a pro, and your the HC, do you roll the dice Regent, even if the talent isn't good in 15'? Just to get maybe an extra win or two?

He's already on campus and hitting both the film room and weights.

Petersen has started a true freshman before so he has it in him to pull that trigger.

The coaches know what they have (or don't have) in Miles. Given how hard this season was for them and the pressure they will be feeling to get that offense fixed, and fixed NOW. I'm not sure they have any choice but to put whoever really gives them the best chance to win. That very well could be Browning. Given that they know what Miles is I would expect to see a LOT of reps going to both freshmen this spring.

IMO Miles would have to make a major jump to keep the job. That bowl game was his death nail. He'd have to suddenly click and learn how to pass down field if he was to have any shot.

You have to give an edge to Carta-Samuels, but if Browning comes out and shows what made him the all time leader in high school QB history he may force their hand.

I'm sure we won't get much but short summations from the practices coming up, but it's still good to have some kind of football going on out at Montlake.

QB will be the only thing everyone will talk about, but there will be battles and questions all over. Particularly on the defense.

Yep. Lots of players graduated and NFL exits. There will be position battles all over this team for sure.

I'm excited to see what happens and trying to stay positive on the Dawgs chances in 2015, although our schedule is a beast.

If the kids buy in and come together they have the chance to be better than last year even after losing talent.

The coaching staff needs to step up and get this team on the same page. That is the biggest need this spring. They need to work hard and come together.

Boise St. quarterback Ryan Finley, who's fighting to win the Broncos starting job, was arrested early Saturday on a pair of misdemeanor charges.

Dave Southorn of the Idaho Statesman reports the sophomore faces charges of a minor in possession of an alcoholic beverage and resisting or obstructing officers. He also notes the school is already looking into the situation.

He was the main QB during their spring practices and game who played with the 1s. This could very well mean he would be suspended for at least the 1st game of the season which is UW depending on how Boise St. plans to proceed.

I agree college athletes have to be held to a high standard, but MIP? What college kid doesn't drink?

There are lots of ways of punishing student athletes that don't remove games from them. He should run stairs for a month.

I agree about that drinking isn't a big deal. It was the resisting part that could be the problem here.

Wow.

Washington media relations sent out the following release this afternoon:

Washington wide receiver John Ross will sit out the coming 2015 season due to a leg injury suffered during spring practice in April, head coach Chris Petersen announced today.

Ross, from Long Beach, Calif., has yet to utilize a redshirt season and therefore has three remaining seasons of eligibility. In his two seasons at the UW, he's returned three kickoff returns for touchdowns while starting at both wide receiver and cornerback.

Coach Petersen also announced today that cornerback Jermaine Kelly (Los Angeles) has opted to leave the UW football team and will transfer to another program.

The Kelly thing was kind of surprise. He broke a bone in his ankle during practice in Sept last year and it's possible the prognosis for him to fully recover isn't good, or he wants to transfer so he can spend another year healing up and have a better shot at getting playing time.
