Just want something else besides the .40 to shoot. 9mm ammo is cheap so I figured I would get one. Any recommendations? Something reliable, but not 600 bucks. It is purely for the range. Not a carry piece.

Don't laugh when I say this but, if you want something cheap that gonna go bang every time you pull the trigger you should check out the Hi Point 9mm's. You can get one for around $200 out the door and, while kinda bulky and fairly ugly, it will be as reliable as damn near anything. I've had one in .45 and it ate everything all the time. Got a 9mm carbine from them now and it's as fun to shoot and reliable as anything I own and only cost me around $300. Don't knock it til you try it.

FN Herstal FNX 9mm is great for the range.

My 85 year old dad just spent a bit over $300 for a Ruger 9mm pistol. Small, pretty light and 8 shot capacity (7 & 1). I think I'm going to look into to trading or selling my very old 8mm Mauser and see if I can parlay that into a small plinking handgun and and a serious hand canon with as little cash outlay as possible.

Great gun but prolly gonna run $500-700 if I'm not mistaken though. I paid around $400 for my S&W Shield and have around 2000 rds through it over the last year and a half with only 2 issues, both with cheaper reloads (Summit Ammo) when I first got it. Lots of good stuff out there in all manner of price ranges.

Might stick with Ruger since that is my other one. Probably go with the SR 9E. Run about 300.

I did think about the hi point. Have a coworker who has the .45. He said it shots pretty good, but is a pain to strip down to clean. Great suggestions though. Thanks!

I have the SR9c and have put about 2000 rounds through it. I've enjoyed shooting it and I can only remember one stovepipe and no other issues. However, I've shot an SR9 a few times, and it had problems. I question how well the owner cleaned and cared for it, but I've read that the full size has been known to malfunction. Either way it turned me off of ever considering trading in for the full size model.

I don't know anything about the SR9e other than it's the slightly cheaper "budget" model. I'd guess it'll be great for what you want it for. I'd be curious how it works out if you get/got it.

I bought an SR9 a few months back. Ive probably put 600 rounds or so through it and haven't had an issue so far.

Ruger P95. You can only get them used now that they were retired in 2013 but they should be pretty darn cheap; unless retiring them has made them more expensive.

The SR series replaced it. So I imagine the SR9 is similar in quality and probably even more so. You could do that or you could go with the newer S&W SDVE pistols. Those are basically Glock copies but about $200 cheaper.

Here's a great review on the P95:
Gun Review: Ruger P95 - The Truth About Guns

Best line, "It’s not pretty, it’s cheap, it shoots every time you pull the trigger, it loves cheap steel-case ammo, you can clean it – or not – it has a safety that’s difficult to reach, and it’s reasonably, though not spectacularly, accurate. In other words, it’s an AK you can hold in one hand."
