They are very, very lucky that they traded for Afflalo. This kills the bench depth they just recently added, though.

Suck for Wes… he's in a contract year so this will hurt him financially too. He'll still get a big pay day but not as much as he would've commanded if he was still healthy heading into the offseason.

They are probably finished as a "contender". Although, I did not think of them truly a contender anyways before at best an unlikely longshot.

They don't have much depth. They finally got a little tiny bit of depth after being a 6 man team for years by adding Afflalo.

And just like that, the depth is gone again.

What sucks is there was a really good chance he was gonna leave and sign with the knicks during the offseason....now it looks like an even better chance my hapless knicks will get him.

edit: Matthews on 1 leg >>>>>>>>> any PG/SG currently on the Knicks.

He'll still get a big pay day for sure. Just maybe not a max contract he might've been able to command if healthy. He's been great this year. Tough blow.

Yeah...I feel bad for the guy.

They're done. They were a dark horse Finals contender (really, just about any of the 8 in the West are) but his injury takes them out of it. They likely won't make it out of the first round with how tough the West is. Afflalo will give them about 80% of what he gave them on offense but its not near enough. Matthews was their best defender and could guard spots 1 thru 3 and muscle some smaller 4s around as well. And his 3 point skills are a heavy part of Portland's offensive efficiency

I don't losing Matthews will hurt my Blazers as much as people think. Afflalo has being bringing the same kind of skill set that Matthews brought, and Steve Blake and CJ Mccollum can replace some of his scoring and 3 point shooting, too. I agree with Hornstampeder that that we were longshot for the championship to begin with, though. I think the Blazers have a chance to make it out of the first round of the playoffs, but it's hard for me to envision my Blazers winning a seven game series with Golden State or Memphis.
