Try a system restore, Crimson.

Click on the start button in the lower left hand corner, then click on All Programs, then click on Accessories, then click on System Tools, then click on System Restore.

Here you will have the option to restore your system files to a previous date. Try to remember when this problem began, and choose a date prior to this. Restore it......and see if it takes care of it. Many times it does.

If it only shows a few system restore dates, check the "show more restore points" checkbox to see more.

It doesn't matter what the description says........whether it was an install or whatever that took place on that date........you can choose it and restore it to that period of time.

On another PC, go to Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download, and download the free version. Put it on a thumbdrive or CD or whatever means you have. (first try this on the infected PC, but a lot of times it locks down the web browser except to their sites).

On the infected PC, shut it off. Turn it back on, and start tapping the F8 key over and over about once a second until you get a black and white menu.

Select Safe Mode with Networking (if you're running wireless, it can be a bit tougher to connect, so try to plug in to the network via cable if possible)

Log into the PC like normal. It will look funky, thats expected.

Plug in your thumb drive/CD and install Malwarebytes. During installation it will try to update the software to the latest/greatest definitions.

Run a quick scan. Follow the prompts after it completes and remove anything that it found.

Reboot to normal mode. Confirm your antivirus is working. If its not, uninstall it and go to Microsoft Corporation: Free Antivirus and download Microsoft Security Essentials. Install it, patch it/upgrade what ever it asks you to do.

Now open Malwarebytes again (with a fully functional antivirus up and running) and run a full scan.

Rinse and repeat earlier steps for removal of anything it found.

If you still don't have any of your desktop icons (I assume you had links, files etc) do a google search for unhider.exe, download it and run it. It will fix all the file permissions that were changed to hidden by the malware.

Let me know what happens when you're done.

You don't have to download anything. Go to any site, if it's been compromised it'll will download by itself. You'll be infected before you remove your hand from the mouse.

You can do the same thing with all browsers, but some pages just won't load correctly regardless when you do that.
