It would look like this in the file that is stored in your browser cache: 'user_id':'RX35twv'. This application is written in PHP, so it can actually store agglomerations of cookies in a big session array ($_SESSION[]), and can maintain an assload of server data about what you've done since the browser has been open, you've been logged in, and been on the site. So somewhere, $_SESSION has a little cookie like (and I'm taking liberties here) 'thread_163543_last_read':23. At least that's my guess.
I woulda said chocolate chip.

It probably doesn't - I think it just tracks the most recent (added) thread from last time you clicked the link. So, let's say your cookie is
'thread_163543_last_read':23
and you click on the link after 7 new posts have been added.
When you click on 'View First Unread' it goes down to link 23 + 1 = 24
The click fires an 'event' that triggers an update for the cookie to something like: 'thread_163543_last_read':30.
So next time you click on 'View First Unread' it goes down to link 30 + 1 = 31

You may not have read down to link 30 the 1st, but it most likely will assume you have, and update the cookie in the manner described above. I will offer a caveat here - it's possible that the app tracks your movement down the page (how many links you actually went down), and updates the cookie to that value + old_value, but I doubt it (though experimentation could prove it one way or the other).

No, I really don't - I'm as dumb as a rock, actually. There once was a thread here that asked which posters you thought were less intelligent than you. I only named 2 - BTchampy and AggieInFlorida. I was actually just kidding, but both of them did end up getting banned. Funny.

My point was that a cookie can only tell what the most recent post was as long as I was on that page. It doesn't know if I read any of them.

Unless it was chocolate chip.

You need to have yourself a few drinks!

That is odd that two posters that you opposed got banned.

Yeah, man, that's what the last paragraph was about. I've had more than a few. Good luck in the future.

Man, I didn't realize how awesome of a tool that was until it went bad on me.
I had problems with some of the buttons a few weeks ago and had to clear the browser cache to get them working.
