The idea that this pipeline just came up out of nowhere and the government really hasn't had time to study it is really b/s. This pipeline has been the talk of the industry for years. TransCanada is one of the companies involved in the project, and if anyone has followed thier stock/company reports. They would know that they have been planning this for years.

Like I said before in regards to the environment. It's way easier to prevent a disaster and have less impact on the environment with leaking, because of the number of valves, and accessibilty to actual workers. Way easier and have a much better track record than deep water drilling and oil tankers going across the ocean.

I still don't understand how you people think this could have been approved so quickly. The new route was not even proposed until November - after the state of Nebraska forced the issue asking to re-route around the Sand Hills region (A pipeline 'avoidance zone'? - Omaha.com). The original proposal was studied for nearly a year. This isn't some minor adjustment of an already approved route.

There is currently only ~3000 miles of of crude oil or liquid pipelines crossing the Ogallala Aquifer.

The politics of pipe: Keystone's troubled route - The Globe and Mail

Quote:
The company failed to listen to key voices. In Nebraska, TransCanada faced down a year of calls to switch its route around the Sand Hills, calls that came from powerful people like Nebraska’s governor and its two U.S. senators. The company refused, adamantly. The Sand Hills route, it said, was far and away the best.

Then, on November 10, 2011, the State department said it had “determined it needs to undertake an in-depth assessment of potential alternative routes in Nebraska,” citing the environmental sensitivities of the Sand Hills. Public concern had trumped technical reassurances. Hollywood had trumped the engineers.

It took four days for TransCanada to agree to change the route and skip the Sand Hills, prompting the question of whether it could have avoided the conflict all along.

Well. As for Keystone, that aquifer needs to be protected. People don't realize that the Enbridge line leaked not that long ago. Also, there are already pipelines running from close to the tar sands in Canada...to Lake Superior. And this is the reason why Paul Ryan wanted to build new refineries in the United States. A new refinery in North Dakota could be built to support tar sands oil as well as oil being pumped locally.

But anyway. It's actually good for Canada in the long run. And good for the world in the long run. The more oil we get to China from a source other than Iran...the better.

They are trying to build a new refinery in South Dakota.

Court hearing set in Union County oil refinery dispute

Unfortunately, the same people trying to block the pipeline are trying to block this as well.

... but wouldn't that mean that we would have to get more oil from "unfavorable" countries?

Don't yell at me! I was just telling LoserOC to get his own pipeline map if mine was "too small to read."

I swear - that boi is like throwin' a weasel into a henhouse.

An exclamation mark ("!"), such as the one included in your post, would indicate yelling. My post included no such punctuation and I would appreciate if you refrain from continuing to make unsubstantiated accusations about poster's beliefs and actions.

We don't get oil from Iran. Meanwhile China's interests in Iran are a serious problem for us.
