When I was putting in my dock I had a snowbird electrician hook up the power for the lift n' sech. Anyway, he told me about when they were building some skyscraper in NYC one of the contractors got busted making copper washers out of pennies by punching a hole in them. Apparently, a copper washer was like 5 cents.

The Secret Service came in and did a big-time SWAT team like bust one day and the dude got real jail time. This was a long time ago because a penny doesn't have much copper anymore.

I guess pennies and nickels can only be used once, which is why it's so critical to lower the manufacturing cost to less than their since use value.

Why don't we just get rid of the change all together & round up to the nearest dollar.

I know I'm not the smartest guy in the world.... But when my overhead was eating me alive, I had to cut back on my employees.... You know, get a little more streamlined to run an efficient business. I know those spenders in DC have never thought of that as a way to save tax-payers money.

I can't remember the last time I used a penny. When I get them back, along with all change, it goes in my kids piggy bank. I hate getting change.

I don't think it is the "single use" they are getting at. Ithink they are more concerned that it takes almost 3 cents worth of material to make something that will only be worth 1/3 of that. Doesn't make any sense to me. You can use the penny as much as you want, but it is still only going to buy you 1/100th of a dollar when it cost 3/100 to produce. The only chance that goes up is if it lasts a really long time and gains some collectable value. Otherwise as soon as that $.03 is stamped with Lincolns head you have lost 2/3 of your value.

If I want a return like that I'll buy a new car...bazinga

i keep a cup of pennies in my cup holder in my truck...when i see people walking, i see how fast i can get going, then wing a handful at their heads....when i run out of pennies, i use batteries.

OMG...me too! But usually I throw them at a car that's going slow in the left lane. When I finally get around it I figure that car has "earned a penny" as I chuck one at it. I got a box full of used spark plugs from my Waggy mechanic - but they're just for throwing at cars with Obama stickers.

I like that idea. I'm tired of seeing - .99 or 9.99 or 199.99.

Just fucking say it's 1.00 or 10.00 or 200 fucking dollars already!

it is a good idea, but taxes would F the whole thing up. I am going through this at work right now, stupid government regulation. We have to figure out how to figure in taxes for dynamic prices so that we can advertise nice even numbers. Not sure if it is the gov or our marketing dept that sucks the big one.
