The unemployment rate measures the people who are unemployed and are actively looking for work. If they aren't trying to find a job, then they are not included in the statistic.

Even if one argued things are getting better in some areas of the economy, the fact is our workforce is shrinking and there are few new jobs. All else is spin. If everyone quit looking for a job, the unemployment rate would be zero. It that good??

The economy IS getting better. That's not spin and it's not based on some anecdote of looking around or talking to people. It's a fact. Can things change? Of course. But the current trend - not hand picking some negative statistic - is towards improvement.
