Damn Leader, this is old news; US education blows harder than Al Gore when he's waxing rhapsodic about his Interwebs creation...

starting largely under the watch of the guy who wrote the article.
I guess expecting people to know that is a stretch. He almost seems to write under a tone of guilt.

Some of this shit has to be laid at the feet of the students as well, and the "everyone get's an A" attitude of society right now.

1. We have too many people going to college.

2. We have too many people going to graduate/professional school.

3. We have focused on areas of education that are not as important, and become lax on some that are.

4. We have pressured teachers/professors into giving out good grades to save their own skin.

5. Standardized testing has become dated and a horrible measuring.

Completely agree; I have family that teach, and it used to be that the "teacher was always right." Now, parents constantly call and harass the teacher because their kid forgot a project was due...

There is also a lot of sampling error in the study, I would expect. You can not just compare tests from a bunch of countries with vastly different population sizes, and distribution. How were the sample exams gathered. Do we really believe that the selected scores in China (a country that claimed 0 H5N1 deaths in 2006) to give us an actual representative sample.

I have to disagree with No 1. We have the wrong people going to college and some of the ones that do aren't being properly education to even have a chance in college.

The US education system has been behind for quite a while now.

The system is a problem. The goal of the US is too get as many kids through as possible, not actually teach them to know their subjects well.

College is what YOU put into it. If you want to take the easy major, and party the whole time, you can and get away with a degree. If you want to challenge yourself and take full advantage of the four years, you can do that as well. I think that too many kids like to "animal house" it. The funny thing is, you can party hard and still do well. You just have to manage your time properly.

A professor that lived next door to me gave me the best advice ever in college. He said to treat it like a job. Get up, get on campus by 8:30-9:00 on every weekday and stay there until 6. Fill the gaps in your schedule with studying and homework. You will still have to fill some free time with extra work on certain weeks, but generally you are way ahead of the curve if you do that.

shit..im working 2 jobs just to try to pay the tuition and survive. My high school was ghetto and shit and I had to go to a business college to find out how to educate myself. of course, none of those courses transferred so now Im shelling out even more money.

Do you have any idea how long this has been going on? Decades. We first noticed it in 1957 when the Russians launched Sputnik.

I'm not as worried about this as others are. Percentage wise the numbers are correct. But, because of the large population of this country, a small percentage of genius or experts adds up to a lot of people. We can more than hold our own against other countries.

As a former teacher I can attest to parents calling me up and hollering at me as to "why I didn't call or e-mail them that a project was assigned."

I don't even teach, but that really, really irritates me. I'm only 27, and even when I was growing up the teacher was always right. Should something arise where I had a complaint about anything, I not only had to definitively prove that I even had a case before my parents would even consider contacting the teacher. Most of the time, my dad would call the teacher and tell them how good of a job they were doing if I was all up in arms about something

Fucking shit-for-brain parents and worthless scum bag entitled kids...

Well, why didn't you? Or were you too busy having short work days and 3 months off with full pay and a whopping pension to add a parent to your email list?

Let's stop wasting time in this thread and point a finger at the unions who've let teachers do a shitty job for all those decades.

Enjoy that nice paycheck in retirement. The rest of us will be working until we're 80 paying for your undeserved pension. <the OP being just one of many reasons it's undeserved>
