Default Pens Give Contract Extension to Vitale

$550,000 per year, and the extension runs through 2013-14 season.

Joe Vitale Gets The Contract Extension He Deserves | Feb2012

Joe has definitely earned it ever since training camp of this season. I just wonder what Shero is up to, signing all these 3rd/4th line centers (O'Reilly couple a days ago).

does not mean much. well it means joe has played well enough to be penciled in for next yr. Park, mcdonald, oreilly all FAs, and prob wont be around, at least not on big squad, park gone period. this signing may also be the end to tangradi (well, oreilly really). I could see tangradi, lovejoy/nisky, picks, or combo being shopped around, depending on/if what shero is going after.

If the Pens are shopping "seriously" I see Tangradi or one of the bottom 3 D being shopped (not likely Engo, because he's signed cheap for 2 more years, Nisky as an RFA could be a good sell, and Lovejoy is cheap for another year). O'Reilly is an RFA after this season as well, so I have a feeling if he pans out it's to take place of a guy like Asham/Park. Regardless, they're all very affordable players. I like Vitale's game A LOT, and that number is very, very nice.

Also, Tangradi is an RFA after this season, so I REALLY see the Pens moving him. Just seems to fit. That said, I'm not so sure Shero will move him for a rental (though I don't think a contract player is what the Pens need/want with this summers signings).

Also, I think the cap situation just confuses me to no end. On capgeek the other day we had the ability to bring on contracts up to $17million, and today it's down to $4million. What in the world happened? Now, LTIR takes away the cap hit by dividing the hit by the percentage of games missed, something like that I'd assume. So when those players come back the team can use that portion of money to bring in other guys, even if the player that WAS on LTIR is back...right? So how in the WORLD did the number fall? Or do I just not understand the cap at all....

Not worth a new thread, but an interesting bit of information about O'Reilly:

Quote:
O'Reilly is enthusiastic about his new team but particularly intrigued by the opportunity to play with a former teammate. Playing on a line in Nashville with current Penguins left wing Steve Sullivan, O'Reilly produced 18 points in the first 27 games of last season.

"We played the first 30 games together. We had good chemistry," said O'Reilly, whose brother also plays in the NHL, with Colorado. "We both had good starts. Then we both ended up getting hurt."
