Default Wings and Fighting

Quote:
In the 1996-97 regular season, leading to the Wings' first Cup in 42 years, the Wings fought 55 times and were 23rd out of 26 teams in the NHL. The Bruins and Islanders led with 90 fights. The Red Wings fought seven times in the playoffs, more than any other team.

In the 1997-98 regular season, the Wings fought 33 times and were 25th out of the 26 teams. The Canucks led with 105 fights. The Red Wings did not fight in the playoffs.

In the 2001-02 regular season, with a roster laden with future members of the Hockey Hall of Fame and other stars, they fought 21 times, the least of any of the 30 teams. The Panthers led the league with 117. Again, the Wings did not fight in the playoffs.

In 2007-08, the Red Wings again fought 21 times, the least of any of the 30 teams. The Flames led the NHL with 70. The Wings fought once in the playoffs.

I think Feaster is trying to emulate the Red Wings model of success and I for one don't have a problem with it...

The Wings don't need to fight. Against the Blues there was a big hit by a Wings defenseman on Pietrangelo. Chris Stewart came to the defense of his teammate. He won the fight, but gave the Wings a powerplay. The Wings scored on the powerplay & played inspired hockey the rest of the game. It can be said that Chris Stewart cost his team the game.

gee what a fascinating proposition ... wonder what other team goes by it???

just make sure the power play keeps clicking and this philosophy will work

Following that logic:

Wings had a dynasty so, there is no longer a need for losing in the NHL.

There's a difference between being tough & having a bunch of goons. I enjoy a good fight like everyone else & think it's a necessary part of the game. At one time the Wings had guys like Probert, Kocur, McCarty & Primeau. They don't have those guys anymore. A player like Morrow would be great, but the price will be very steep.

And the New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils also won cups without much static.

Simple. You win championships by doing things to beat the other teams. As was said Wings ain't gotta fight, because you give them Power Plays, you lose.

The Oilers of the 80's did not care at all about taking penalties because they could score shorthanded as well as they could even strength.

Figure out what you have better than everyone else, and build your organization around it.

Actually the Flyers won their cups with a bunch of goons. The Isles had guys like Gillies & Nystrom willing to drop the gloves at any time.

The Oilers didn't care if they got a powerplay or not. All they needed was 4 on 4 hockey to kick the other teams ass. Semenko made sure Gretzky wasn't touched & the rest was history. The Oilers were the reason the league got rid of 4 on 4 hockey. They simply had too much talent for the rest of the league. I wonder how many cups the Oilers would have won if Gretzky had never been traded. I'd say at least 4 or 5 more.

I don't mind fighters, as long as they can play. I would have no problem going back to icing a team like the '97 Wings. Lapointe, McCarty, Shanahan could all fight and play with the best of them.

I was being facetious. Lashing out at the notion that one team didn't need fighters to win, therefore fighting isn't needed in the game.

Whatever you are good at, go with that.

Fighting isn't needed in the game, but that's another discussion.

What does it accomplish, really? In terms of actual hockey, I mean. In terms of objective, tangible hockey.

It gets people like me to post FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! and end my message with a smiley face.

What does hockey accomplish without fighting? It's still just a game. Fighting adds to the excitement and the strategy.

But what's the strategy? Most star players don't fight, so that all but eliminates the strategy of taking a star off the ice for five minutes. Beyond that, I see it as nothing more than an unnecessary injury risk.

It's like hanging a punching bag in the basement, it keeps you from chasing pedestrians down the sidewalk in your car.

If you don't like my analogy, I'll punch you in the face!
