Recruiting Class Averages for Title Winners Compared With NU.

Jeds response to my post explaining that Alabama was winning titles because of their recruiting classes went something like: "Oh yeah? Well look at Texas! They're off the charts in recruiting every year and they've hardly done anything with them!"

While it's true that Great recruiting classes don't guarantee you National titles, they do guarantee you a chance at one. Conversely in the last 8 years a class average anywhere over 11.5 in the country has guaranteed you WON'T win a national title.



Let's look at the National champs from 2004 to present and their respective recruiting classes that comprised those championship teams using rivals rankings. Rivals began ranking classes in 2002. I'll even add Nebraska's avg class ranking through the same years for comparison.

2004 National Champ: USC
Class rankings:
-'02 - 13th
-'03 - 3rd
-'04 - 1st
Avg Ranking: 5.6 Nebraska's avg: 36.6

2005 National Champ: Texas
Class rankings:
-'02 - 1st
-'03 - 15th
-'04 - 10th

Avg Ranking: 11.5 Nebraska's avg: 28.5

The average ranking of the classes that made up these National Championship teams is 7.4

Nebraska's avg through these years is 24.4

The numbers speak for themselves. The odds are and have been HUGELY stacked against us winning a national title.

This years team class avg is 24. Right on par with where we've been.

Texas has has an average recruit ranking of 3.66 the last 3 years and over the last 2 years their record is 13-12.

Look at Georgia's consistent top 10 classes. How many conference titles do they have.

Look at Philip Fullmer's classes at Tennessee. Yeah they won a title in 1998 but where did those good classes get him? Fired!!!

Horrible argument.

Coaching can only get you so far...you have the actual talent and athletic ability to do what you are coached to do. If you can't run as fast or physical as the guy you're going to be covering, you're going to have to run a lot more zones and not man. Opens up a lot of holes in your defense.

Same goes for talent, you can only get so far with talent and poor coaching. You have to have a mixture of the two.

Exactly. Coaching is only half of the equation. There are some GREAT coaches out there working with roughly the same level of talent we are. Some more, some less.

Frank Beamer, Gary Patterson, Pat Fitzgerald, Dana Holgerson, Kirk Ferentz, Chris Petersen. None of them have National Titles and between all of them they have only 1 title appearance. Why? They just don't have the talent that the Alabama's and LSU's of the world regularly bring in.

If we could just string together a couple of top 10 classes.... I swear to you that we absolutely without a doubt would be in the hunt for a national title. So far 11.5 or better is the magic number.

2010 was close. 15th. If we would have landed peat and fuller I bet you we would have been around 15th again but we ended up 25th. Close enough and if we can do a little better next year and the year after then we are fucking golden guys.

Developing recruits into players is a 100 times more important than recruiting rankings. A 5* recruit just has a few more skills and talents to start with than a 3*.

That's my point. I'm saying using his logic he's no better than anyone who concerns themselves with 17 year old recruits.

There's always exceptions to the rule and Tom Brady is one of them.

I'm talking about AVERAGES here. NOT INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS, BUT ENTIRE CLASSES. We're talking about building a talent pool of 85 scholarship players accumulated through roughly 4 or 5 years. Not Tom freaking Brady.
